Philip Chiu Education

Philip Chiu is Professor and Chief of Division of Upper GI and Metabolic Surgery, Department of Surgery; Director of Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Center; Director of Endoscopy Center, Institute of Digestive Disease, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is also the President of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA). His research interests include novel endoscopic technologies for diagnosis of early GI cancers, endoscopic surgery and robotics for endoluminal surgery. He was the first in Hong Kong to perform ESD for treatment of early GI cancers in 2004. In 2010, he performed the first Per-oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) in Hong Kong. In 2011, he pioneered the world’s first robotic gastric ESD, followed by world’s first robotic colorectal ESD in 2020. He has published over 370 peer reviewed manuscripts and 6 book chapters, and has earned accolades including State Scientific Technology and Progress Award from People’s Republic of China.
